Building Bridges Through Law: ELSA Komotini's Legal Tandem with ELSA Niš

From 15 to 18 May of 2026, a delegation of ELSA Komotini had the privilege of travelling to Serbia to take part in "Legal Tandem x Study Visit," a project organised in close cooperation with our gracious host, ELSA Niš. What started as an exchange of legal ideas quickly became something much more meaningful: a genuine meeting between two groups of young law students, united by curiosity, academic ambition and a shared European spirit.

The academic heart of the project, the Legal Tandem, brought us together at the Science and Technology Park of Niš and focused on this year’s theme: the implementation of human rights in Greece and Serbia. Through presentations, workshops, and interactive discussions, participants explored how two different legal systems approach the protection of fundamental rights, identifying both common challenges and distinct legal solutions.

Particular attention was devoted to the relationship between freedom of expression and hate speech, a complex issue that continues to shape legal and societal discourse across the continent. By comparing legislation, judicial approaches, and contemporary realities in both countries, we engaged in a constructive exchange of ideas that went beyond theoretical analysis, fostering critical thinking, mutual understanding, and a deeper appreciation of how legal principles are applied within different social and institutional contexts. Through this dialogue, participants not only broadened their knowledge of human rights protection but also experienced the true value of international legal cooperation and intercultural exchange.

Still, these days were about much more than law. We were welcomed with remarkable warmth. Our hosts opened not only the doors of their university to us, guiding us through its halls and introducing us to their academic environment, but also the doors of their city. We explored the historic streets of Niš, discovered its cultural heritage and landmarks and experienced the rich history that shapes the identity of the region. Every activity was accompanied by the enthusiasm and hospitality of ELSA Niš, whose dedication made us feel at home from the very first moment.

The social programme and cultural exchange transformed professional acquaintances into real friendships. Shared meals, conversations, and experiences allowed us to learn from one another not only as future legal professionals but also as individuals coming from different cultural backgrounds. These moments embodied the very essence of ELSA: fostering international understanding through friendship, cooperation, and shared experiences.

We departed with our notebooks fuller, our perspectives broadened and our friendships deepened. ELSA Komotini extends its heartfelt gratitude to ELSA Niš for their outstanding hospitality and dedication. It is our sincere hope that this Legal Tandem will become a lasting tradition between our two local groups and serve as a reminder for the wider ELSA network of the value of international cooperation, academic exchange and the connections that can be built when young people come together across borders.
